In our early years, Govan Brown was retained by Loblaw’s to develop kitchens and tasting rooms to test their new President’s Choice products. Located in the same tower as Loblaw’s head office, the new product facility was built with a very specific scope. Additionally, the extensive design had to be implemented on floors that were partially occupied and within a limited timeframe. Loblaw‘s 28,620 square foot testing facility presented our construction team with many challenges. A comprehensive schedule was drafted to identify
disruptive or loud work that had to be completed after hours. Our master schedule ensured that we would not disturb the staff that occupied the floors under construction or any of the building’s other tenants. Challenges also included the project scope itself. Many intricate elements were included in the design including an interconnecting staircase within the facility as well as completing open-concept offices with high-end finishes. The most distinct features of the space however, were the highly detailed kitchens. Considering its purpose as a test-
ing facility, the Loblaw’s kitchens had to be outfitted with many unique mechanical systems for the purpose of eliminating the transfer of smells and aromas. The kitchens were also furbished with high quality stoves, ovens, freezers and fridges, necessary for an area dedicated to food preparation. Begun in 1996, the Loblaw’s space represents one of Govan Brown’s first large projects. Our successes on this project showcased our ability to tackle projects of varying sizes.
