In 2012, Equinox retained Govan Brown as their construction managers for their tenant fit-up of the second and third floor of Commerce Court West in Toronto’s Financial District. The 36,600 square foot area was designed to be downtown’s premiere fitness facility with complete spa accommodations. There were many challenges to building a fitness facility in an office tower. Major mechanical work was required as the features of the spa and bathing
    

areas of the gym necessitated extensive plumbing and duct work. In fact we were challenged to install duct work that ascended to the 17th floor where the tower’s mechanical room resided. Another interesting feature of the space was the raised gym floor. Built on a spring-like base, the floor was designed to absorb the impact of dropped weights and to mitigate sound transfer to other building tenants. Built into the spa area were luxury sho-

wers, steam rooms, humidified yoga rooms, saunas and a juice bar-all of which required extensive plumbing. Other mechanical installations included multiple air handling units and cosmetic details included stone-decorated walls and floors. Despite many challenges, our team was able to successfully complete the Equinox facility.
