Govan Brown is proud to be able to maintain long-term relationships with our clients, many of whom retain us for multiple projects. One of such companies is Delcan - an extremely successful engineering consultant firm. After our successful completion of their offices in Ottawa, Delcan sought to build-out a historic building in Kingston. Vacant prior to Delcan’s acquisition of the space in 2011, the former Smith Robinson building had served as a piano factory, an army  barrack  in World War II and finally a home to S&R Department  Store. Govan

Brown was requested to build-out this historic building into a suitable home for Delcan. There are many constraints for working in a historic site. The entire 60,000 square foot space required an entirely upgraded HVAC system. Considering the age of the building, the existing systems, prior to our renovation, had not been up-graded in decades. It was necessary to implement the office amenities without causing any collateral damage to the  original  building envelope of the site. We were successful in  doing  so  and  by  the time of comp-

letion Govan Brown had constructed new offices, a boardroom, kitchenette and a new T-bar ceiling. The history of the George Brown- designed building is rich to say the least. Almost destroyed by a fire in 1908, the building has been maintained a historic value within the community. Govan Brown was happy to conduct a project that did not waiver from our goal of preserving the integrity of the celebrated building.
